Spring at Hambleton Hall

When I recently wrote about our lovely afternoon at Hambleton Hall, I did mention a follow-up outfit post. Hambleton hall is a special place so I was going to make a little more effort than I normally do for Saturday afternoon shenanigans. Sadly, I felt like my efforts didn't quite live up to the illustrious surroundings and its temporary inhabitants. However (and hence), this is more than just an outfit post.  Pardon the cliche but spring had sprung and the gardens at Hambleton were beautiful and photo-worthy. In contrast to the spring blooms but sympathetic to the majestic stone architecture, I strayed from my signature bright colours to a much more muted look.

The highlight of my ensemble was my beloved Emma Cook printed silk skirt. I'd stalked the skirt for nearly two years until I found it recently via eBay at a tiny fraction of the original price. I believe that when you choose truly special items, they continue to bring joy even if a few seasons old. I've teamed by skirt with a classic black panel top from the Cos sale (highly recommended for classic minimalistic and quality items). And, do you remember my £4.50 charity shop black leather boots? The £600ish outfit ( top, skirt and shoes) was bought for less than a tenth of the retail price and was worn with pride and joy.

London to Paris with Tour De France

Given how much I love Londontown, I thought it was only fitting I gave my readers a quick shout out about the 2014 Tour De France coming to London. This is the biggest annual sporting event in the world with its history dating back to 1903! I went to see the Tour a few years ago and I remember being captivated by the buzz of the place. The weather was glorious and after we cheered the cyclists on, we wandered on to Green Park to continue watching the race on giant telly. This year, the Grand Depart starts from Leeds moving to Harrogate, con tuning then from York to Sheffield  and finally from Cambridge to London.

To commemorate the race, the folks at Yorkshire Building Society have organised a rather exciting photo competition. All you need to do is to take a Tour De France related picture and upload it to Twitter or Instagram with #tdfybs to be entered into a prize draw. The winner will receive a pair of hospitality tickets, including two nights bed and breakfast, for the Tour De France finish at Champs Elysses in Paris!! More choice for gluten-free products

It may seem like the current hype about gluten-free diets and foods has come from nowhere. Some people see it is as yet another fad spurred on by diet-conscious celebrities who give up gluten to ‘beat the bloat’. But for people who have coeliac disease, a gluten-free diet isn’t a choice, it’s a necessity.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease caused by intolerance to gluten. When sufferers eat gluten it damages the lining of the gut and causes a range of symptoms, including diarrhoea, excessive wind and/or constipation, persistent nausea and vomiting, tiredness and/or headaches… to name just a few.

According to recent findings, published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, the number of people in the UK diagnosed with coeliac disease increased fourfold between 1990 and 2011. It’s now thought one in 100 people in the UK have the disease – but only 24% have been diagnosed, meaning there are around half a million people who have a gluten intolerance but don’t know it.  ‘It’s a shocking statistic that needs urgent attention,’ says Sarah Sleet, chief executive of Coeliac UK.

However, the rise in diagnoses has resulted in increased demand for gluten-free food – good as more and more products hit the shelves. However, Coeliac UK members report that they have to travel to large supermarkets to find gluten-free products, often visiting more than one store to buy everything on their shopping list.

That’s why this Coeliac Awareness Week (12–18 May), the charity is campaigning to increase availability of gluten-free staple foods in supermarkets. For further information see coeliac.org.uk/gfg.

If you’ve been diagnosed with coeliac disease, adapting to a gluten-free diet can seem daunting at first, but with a few ingredient switches, you can still enjoy your favourite recipes. Try these…

* There’s a lot of gluten-free pasta available now, so you can still enjoy spaghetti bolognese and lasagne if you also use cornflour for your cheese sauce and buy a gluten-free bolognese sauce.

* Try alternative cereals such as quinoa and teff. Quinoa is nutritious (it contains protein, fibre, iron and folate) and ideal as a basis for salads – and teff adds a delicious nutty flavour to biscuits. 

* If you’re ever stuck for ideas in the kitchen, branch out into different cuisines: Mexican meals include a lot of corn and rice, which are both naturally gluten-free cereals, so you could maybe go for corn tacos with chilli, guacamole and salsa; Indian and Thai curry sauces, also served with rice, are usually made with combinations of onions, garlic, ginger and fresh chilli with spices, maybe with coconut milk or ground nuts, so are often gluten free, too. 

* A bit of experimentation, plus speciality flours and baking aids (including gluten-free baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and xanthan gum) can make gluten-free baking a success. It’s the gluten that gives your bread, cakes and pastry the right texture and provides structure, which is why gluten-free bread can be dry and solid, and cakes and pastry a lot more crumbly. But there are many speciality flours available in supermarkets that work perfectly well in your favourite recipes.

Happy One Month Ickle Blog!

I cannot believe that its only a month since I launched my brand new blog! I've had over 2300 hits, written 14 new posts and and have 'virtually' met lots of really interesting people. The Quirky Lifestyle Facebook page has a 100+ likes but clearly needs building up. I'm so very grateful for all the support I've received from my friends (and my lovely husband) and for all the experiences I've able to share here. Thank you for indulging me!. Following the demise of my much neglected travel, fashion and food blogs (I've deleted them!) , I am determined to keep this baby alive. I've imported all the old posts and am currently going through a tedious housekeeping process.

As with most things, I figured a list would help me focus. So, here is my little wish list of 10 things I'd like to do before my blog turns 1....

1. Ethical Fashion: In keeping with my passion for ethical and thrifty fashion, I'd like to start a feature on some of the best Charity Shops around. I'm already planning my Kensington run... 
2. Celebrity: A bit of celebrity is always good for inspiration and business. I'd like to interview someone famous I admire for the blog. Watch out Vivienne Westwood and Heston Blumenthal! ;)
3. Food Blogging: I've learnt quickly (deleted blogs saga)  that blogging is very much about networking. I'd love to attend a food bloggers event and connect with some more 'real' people who blog and in the process develop that network.
4. DIY: I'm all about upcylcing and recycling so I'd like write about at least five really interesting DIY projects. Design my own shoe or handbag perhaps?!
5. Ethical Investment: I'd love to find one iconic 'forever' fashion piece from a charity shop and blog about the 'how'.Can you hear me Coco?
6. Travel & Adventure:  I've not been travelling as much I'd like to lately. I gently remind myself that I do have family responsibilities, a full time job and mortgage. Nevertheless, I'd like to travel to and blog about at least three destinations I haven't been to before (either UK or overseas) in the next year.
7. Fashion Week: I *so* want to attend London Fashion Week! I need to figure out how to go about this as a baby blogger. No plans so far but watch this space...
8. Olfactory Indulgence:  I am a huge fan of perfume-especially the niche brands. I'd love to visit a perfumery workshop and blog about the experience. Oh how I'd *love* to visit Grasse !
9. Quirky Partying: Nothing like a bit of dress-up and partying. Even better if it is on a grand scale. I really fancy participating in a themed weekend, I'm thinking posh murder mystery evening...
10. Recognition: As this is a wish list for the next 12 months and I'd be putting a lot of heart, soul and energy into it,  maybe I need to think about some recognition. Sign up for a blog award perhaps!?

Sunken Churches and Pearls on Girrafes

Rest and sunshine are good for the soul. I'd had an incredibly busy few weeks with lots of work related travel included and I needed to stop. Ed and I decided to take the day off, chill out and also attend to some much needed housekeeping. It was a while since we'd had beautiful weather and we decided to organise a picnic lunch in between our chores.
Rutland water is a local water reserve and a great place  for picnics. We headed to the south shore of Rutland Water near the famous Normanton Church. The church which was a private chapel to the Normanton Estate escaped demolition despite being below the flood level for the proposed reservoir. It was de-consecrated in 1970 and a Trust was formed to try and ensure its preservation. A bank was built to protect it from the water and a causeway was laid to provide access. This iconic structure is now a museum and a lovely sight .

Rutland water is also a great place for all means of outdoor activities including fly fishing, rafting, sailing and cycling. It had well planned walking routes which we chose to make the most of following our sumptuous picnic lunch. Visiting Rutland water is a great idea if you are in this part of the world and I'd definitely recommend looking up their website for full details of facilities on offer.

Whilst it was sunny, it wasn't as warm as I'd have liked it to be and so I had to dress appropriately. I chose a Moschino dress with a cheeky print of a giraffe wearing pearls and teamed it with a simple top from Zara. I wore some pearls too to match the giraffe and I thought it worked out quite well! The dress was a lucky find in the my-wardrobe sale and I managed to shave an additional 40% with a voucher code. Result! Top tip, always look for discount codes, even it something is in the sale. To keep the chill off, I carried with me a lovely vintage leather jacket which cost me... hold your breath.. £1!!. I've had it for a few years and it still does the trick.

Car Boot Fashion Bravery

De-cluttering always makes me feel virtuous. The best type of de-cluttering is one that generates a bit of cash and helps me justify those impulse fashion splurges. So the husband and I had yet another 5 AM Sunday morning start to get to a local cat boot. It was freezing cold and windy which meant it wasn't as busy as we would have liked it and gave me some posing time. Car boots are not glamorous events but I think a bit of fashion and colour never hurt. So here are a couple of 'poser' photos and another opportunity to show-off my favourite new Uniqlo Cloche Hat! At a very reasonable £14.90, this classic  hat will see a lot of wear from Autumn through to Spring for a few seasons to come.

Bonfire Night Experiments

I love bonfire night for many reasons: fireworks displays (but not so much the noise), toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate, toffee apples, hearty food and good friends. Bonfire night (or Guy Fawkes night) in England marks the annual celebration of the failed gunpowder plot. In 1605, the plot by Guy Fawkes and fellow conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill James I was foiled. Most communities in the country celebrate this day with bonfires and fireworks. It now represents an integral part of English tradition and is often combined with Halloween parties. And, its probably one good reason to visit the UK in November! If you are interested in some of the associated history, check out my post on Lyveden New Bield 

We decided to get together with some friends and build a bonfire in our allotment. We had some old wood and willow branches that needed burning and the bonfire was a good excuse to get that sorted. The boys built the bonfire while us girls drank mulled wine. And of course we had to have some fireworks! As much as we enjoyed our own version of fireworks, we also got a free display of a much more impressive nearby fireworks display.  I also experimented with some Halloween style toffee apples and I'll share the recipe soon.
