Charity Shop Outfit for a Norfolk Wedding

Ed and I were down in our old home patch of East Anglia to celebrate the wedding of our friends. I was very excited for our friends and their big day, and wanted to make sure I had a fitting outfit for the event. My initial choice was a Somerset by Alice Temperley dress from the John Lewis summer sale. Then on one of my weekly charity shop trawls around Stockbridge, I found this amazing Missoni dress plonked on a size 16 rail!

I have previously bought things I absolutely love in bigger ( and smaller) sizes before but I wasn't sure a 16 could work. Thankfully, it was actually an Italian 44 which is more a UK 12....the shop assistant wasn't sure about the sizing and summed it was a 16...my lucky day! And....it was £29!!!! I have never been so excited about a dress before! Just another reason why I love charity shopping!

My friend Pip grew up in this idyllic village is rural Nofolk and their wedding was in a little church in Plumstead, opposite the house where they lived. It was a lovely setting but what made it all the more interesting was the Dutch flag flying high in front of the church. 'I wonder what UKIP would make of this then?' Ed joked. Jerre, our friend the groom, is Dutch and they have a very funky sense of humour!

The wedding was beautiful and our friends looked so happy! A lovely personal wedding in a beautiful surroundings, just the sort of thing I love. The church was quaint and old worldly...and while it was cloudy and it rained, it simply added to the atmosphere of the place. I know I haven't got a picture of the lovely couple but I'd like to ask their permission (in between their wonderful honeymoon) first as I avoid personal photos of friends and family unless they want to be featured on the site.

Ed was taken by the painting of St. George in particularly...he reckoned the 'face' bore a remarkable resemblance to Pete Cook ( the priest in Princess Bride)?!

I loved the little details around the church ( the brass fittings, the stained glass windows) and the wonderfully intricate embroidery on the kneelers...I love all things that have a bit of 'soul'.

Have you been to Norfolk? It is a lovely place with lots of history, beautiful beaches, great countryside and friendly folk...well worth a visit! Ann x

How do you measure up?

It worries me that only a third of people in the UK know that having a large waist increases their chances of getting type 2 diabetes. But just how many of us actually know what a ‘large waist’ even means?

Well, it’s 31in (80cm) for women and over 37in (94cm) for men – and, believe me, that isn’t actually that big.

I couldn’t remember what my waist measurement was so I decided to practise what I preach and, after a lot of searching round the house, finally found my tape measure. Not many people know how to accurately measure their waist. But it’s really not that difficult. Just find the bottom rib and your hip - your waist is in middle of these two points. Take the measurement (at this point) when you breathe out and your stomach is relaxed. Be honest with yourself, which means not pulling the tape measure too tight in an attempt to shave off a few centimetres!

Measuring my waist was actually quick and easy and now I know what my waist size actually is. I challenge you to do the same.

Why, you may ask. Because if you don’t know something is a problem, you can’t do anything about it. If your waist is large, you can significantly reduce your chances of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancer by losing weight and making simple lifestyle changes. Go on, find the tape measure lurking at the back of your drawers and give it a go.

Other things that increase your risk of type 2 diabetes include being over 40 years old; being from a South Asian or black ethnic background; having a strong family history (brother, sister or parent) with diabetes, having polycystic ovaries, gestational diabetes or having given birth to a baby over 10lb.

Of course, if you already have type 2 diabetes, getting to grips with your weight could really help you when it comes to managing the condition and keeping you healthy in the future, too.

What's in my bag?

I've been excitedly looking forward to Kristina's Hultkrantz's illustration of what is my handbag. Kristina is an uber creative illustrator based in Stockholm and I fell in love with her work through the pages of Pinterest. Her drawings are cheerful, quirky and so very stylish. I feel very honoured to be a part of her blogger collaboration series on 'What's in my handbag?'

Whilst a picture is worth a thousand words, a brief note on the contents of my handbag that help me function through the day are worth a mention. I tend to travel a lot and so my Iphone and Blackberry help me stay in touch with whatever is happening out there, be in in the world of fashion or work. My Moleskine and travel notebooks help me organise my life and thoughts. I find writing and making lists therapeutic. Other handbag favourites includes my delightful watermelon coin purse, a bright pink Chanel lipstick, Burts Bess Rhubarb Lip Shimmer, a stock of perfume samples from my favourite brands (Diptyque's Tam Dao being the flavour of the month) and Rituals Gingko Hand Balm ( the best hand cream ever!). We do have the odd few sunny days in the UK and my Moschino sunnies make the world look better. A copy of the latest National Geographic magazine (or Vogue) makes late evening train journeys back from London or elsewhere much more enjoyable. And, my good old cucumber flavoured Dettol hand sanitiser is an absolute travel essential and fights the multitude of bugs I come in contact with whilst travelling around the Tube and public transport. Why free school meals are a good thing

Pupils at Walnut Tree Walk Primary School in London sat down to lunch with Nick Clegg last December. But not everyone's so impressed with the School Food Plan…

Free school meals for all infant school children in English primary schools became a reality with the start of the autumn term. So how come some people are against them?

The provision of free school meals for all children in reception classes and years one and two was a key recommendation of the independently produced School Food Plan, published by Henry Dimbleby and John Vincent in July last year.

You don’t have to look far for vocal dissenters of the scheme – complaints include kitchens not being ready, meals not being balanced and the bad economics of offering free meals for children of parents who could afford to pay.

As a nutritionist, I find it hard to see that a programme that sets out to provide every small child aged five to seven with a balanced meal at lunchtime can be a bad thing.

Pilot studies in Durham and Newham in London, carried out between 2009 and 2011, have shown that the children who were given healthy, free school lunches were two months ahead academically, compared with their non-free school meal contemporaries. They revealed an increase of almost 25% in the consumption of vegetables, an 18% reduction in the consumption of crisps, a reduction in sugary drinks and an increase in water as the drink of choice.

I’ve also heard fantastically positive success stories from head teachers and school cooks who believe that classes of children who eat together and learn together, whatever their backgrounds, is a good thing.

The bottom line is that children concentrate better, feel better and probably, as a result, behave better (allowing a teacher to do their job with fewer interruptions), when they’ve eaten good food.

Some lunches may not yet be nutritionally ideal, some school head teachers not fully engaged, some school kitchens and cooks not fully ready and up to speed, but it’s a work in progress and we need to look at the longer term.

The school lunch system needs ‘customers’ to survive: the more children eating at school, the better the meals and service can be. So, once they’re in the system, it’s hoped that those entitled to continue to have funding for their lunches will do just this, while those who can afford to pay also continue.

Whichever way you cut it, I’m a supporter. I hope we see the scheme succeed and, crucially, that the children for whom it's intended benefit nutritionally, academically and socially through the simple pleasure of being able to sit round a table and enjoy lunch with their friends.

DIY Sparkly Keds

I am terrible at wearing weather/activity appropriate footwear. This morning, for example, I walked across a muddy pumpkin farm in my leopard flats. I don't need to tell you what those dainty shoes look like right now. I will of course rescue them but that isn't the point. I do this all the time and don't engage brain with shoes, to my own despair. My trusty old Keds have suffered in a similar fashion. They've come with me on so many of my travels over the years but have also survived many an inappropriate walk to the allotment. I finally decided to treat them with the respect they deserve.

This is quite possibly one of the easiest of easy DIYs on my blog. This is what I did:

Machine wash the shoes. You can do this with Converse's too.
Let them dry out well. This could take a couple of days at least, in this weather.
Plan your up-cycled shoe design.
Use glitter glue and a paint brush to apply sparkle to your shoes. This can be done just the way I recommended in my DIY Almost Choos post.
Apply at least two coats.
Let them dry out properly.
Sparkle while you walk in comfort.

Squid Ink Risotto with Roast Vegetables. Caution: Not for the faint-hearted!

I really can't remember where or when I got the idea of cooking with squid ink. It was sometime early 2008 and I remember looking for hours in shops and online for a bit of squid ink. I finally bought it off Rick Stein's website and paid four times the cost of the product for delivery. My first experiment back then went quite well and I served the risotto with some homemade Greek style yogurt and peppers. Now that we have a lottie and enough veg to feed the city, I decided to cook a simple recipe with an assortment of veg. I must admit that not all offers to cook this at dinner parties were accepted. Shame really as it does have a special flavour. Anyway, here is the recipe.

Ingredients:

Squid ink

250g risotto ( 4 servings)

2 cups chicken stock-use 1 cube

1 Courgette

1 Aubergine

1/2 Acorn Squash

Onion
3 large tomatoes

Method:

Heat a bit of olive oil in a pan and add the risotto and fry for a couple of minutes. Add the squid ink and continue to fry. Now add stock and stir until the risotto is smooth, creamy and cooked. Meanwhile, chop and season the vegetables and roast them. I like spicing my veg but you can do whatever you like really. Serve the risotto topped with roast veg. Finito!

Charity Shops: The Boutique, Pimlico London

I think Mary Portas is an amazing woman. When she gives something her seal of approval, I think its worth noting. So in my quest for amazing charity shops, I found Mary Portas's endorsement of the Crusaid shop in Pimlico. Crusaid has now been reinvented as The Boutique and it is pretty swanky for a charity shop. It is managed by the Terrence Higgins Trust which is the largest voluntary sector provider of HIV and sexual health services in the UK. It never ceases to amaze me how customer service is often so much better in a charity shop than a say a high street or designer store. The people that work here are often volunteers and not on big bucks but they are always willing to help. Needless to say, customer service was top notch at The Boutique too.

Charity shops are becoming more and more up-market these days and this particular one is a good example. The stock here included brand new Liberty silk scarves (donated by Liberty), Burberry and Tods bags, couture from Balmain and Dior etc. The shop had two rooms; one that focused on art, home decor and books and the other mainly fashion with a sprinkling of all sorts of other things too. I was particularly impressed by its collection coffee table books on travel and fashion and its vintage china.

The Boutique is a short walk from the Pimlico tube station and they also have log where they take note of any items you may be particularly interested in. I've listed vintage Chanel, Givenchy and Mulberry and am eagerly waiting for a phone call. Happy charity shopping! Ann x

London Fashion Week AW13: Edeline Lee

I'd be lying if I said I knew anything about Edeline Lee before LFW. Nevertheless, I happened to get an invite to her AW13 presentation on the last day of Fashion Week. Day 5 also happened to be the day I got the maximum invites so I'm pleased that despite thinking about it, I did not give her show a miss. The location of the presentation was intriguing and historic Middle Temple Hall which brought to mind secret rituals and masonic elements. The collection seemed inspired in parts by Egyptian mythology, Adam & Eve and the Art Deco era. The prevailing ambience was one of mysteriousness.

The presentation took place at 10 minute intervals. As we walked in, the models were dancing to what I now understand were 16th century Tudor dance steps. The fact is, I only knew this from scouring show reports whilst attempting to make full sense of the presentation. After that, the girls they seemed to partake in some kind of old-school cultish ritual but lining up to bow before the main character who wore a blouse with the Eye of Horus printed on it. It was at once both baffling and interesting.

I will now stop my feeble attempts to deciper to mind of Edeline Lee and her choreographer and let you enjoy the photos ( all mine) instead. Ann x
