We are Allotmment People!

I received a very unexpected call whilst working from home one day in March. We were offered an allotment plot!! We have been on the waiting list for the nearby allotment for over a year and were 11th on the list last year. Somewhere along the line all the competition had vanished and we were given the the choice of two plots; one an overgrown and waterlogged half plot  and the other a humongous full plot with a polytunnel that reminded me a bit of Jungle Book. We chose the latter fully knowing how much hard work it would be. I will post our progress on here as often as I can. Wish us luck!!

How to knit a chunky two toned scarf

In keeping with my winter bucket list, I've been trying to make homemade presents whenever I can. So for my mother-in-law's birthday, I decided to make her a chunky handmade rowan scarf. I found knitting with chunky rowan slightly harder ( as compared to a synthetic mix) due to the fibrous nature of the wool. However, after a few rounds, I seemed to get the hang of it. This scarf is really easy to make and only uses the basic knit stitch. Its beauty solely lies in the quality and colours of the rowan wool. Here is what I did...

You will need:

• 3 balls of rowan drift merino wool in two colours, 100g per ball
• size 10 knitting needles
• an endless amount of patience

Method:

Cast on 28,  and knit 28 per row until you finish the balls of wool (approximately 125 rows in total). To join a new colour, make sure you start at the top of the row for uniformity. Cast off and sew in loose ends.

And that is it! This is a great project for a first time knitter and will help you build confidence. I somehow seem to be stuck on scarves and am currently working on two more woolly presents! Hope you are having a lovely week and if you aren't, its Friday tomorrow!! Ann x

DIY Scarf Watch

 You probably know that I am a sale stalker. A Moschino scarf watch recently caught my eye. It was 50% off  in the sale at £60. Rather than succumbing to yet another purchase, I figured I could find a way of making my own version and hopefully one the was more versatile as a result. Here is how I went about it.

You will need

•  A scarf, preferably smallish and not too delicate. I chose a £1 vintage scarf from our local Sue Ryder shop
• A watch, preferably one that has a strap that is easy to un-hinge. I chose this lovely Mango watch that I bought a few years ago.
• A pair of pliers
• Some measure of patience.

Method:

Un-hinge the watch strap using jewellery making pliers. Roll the scarf and thread it through the watch loops. This was harder than I thought as some of my scarves were either too big or the material was not fine enough to loop through the watch. Even my vintage square scarf needed a fair enough of pulling to get it through the watch. This also depends on the spacing within your watch loops. 

Once you've looped through the scarf, tie the scarf around your wrist and bingo! Hopefully the pictures below are self-explanatory. So easy and it saved me £60 :)

Summer Dreams: Eton Mess with Rhubarb and Edible Flowers

I can't think of a more quintessentially English dessert than Eton Mess. It is classic, simple and very easy to make. In order to use my the vast quantities of Rhubarb growing in our garden and allotment, I chose to substitute the traditional ingredient i.e. strawberry with Rhubarb and edible flowers from our garden. I also used the leftover egg whites from the Creme Brulee I made the other week to make the meringues. Egg whites keep well in the fridge in a sealed container for a week or two. Here is how I made it:

Ingredients:

For the meringue:

4 large egg whites

100g icing sugar

30g caster sugar

For the compote:

1 stalk of rhubarb per serving

1 tsp vanilla extract

Few edible flower petals, I used pansies

200 ml double cream

Method:

Meringue:

Heat the oven to 140 C (fan oven). Whisk the egg whites until stiff. Slowly add the sugar and continue whisking until smooth and glossy. Use a teaspoon and scoop onto parchment paper/foil on baking tray and bake for about 20 minutes or until the meringues are ready. I made about 20 meringues with the quantity of ingredients listed. After you turn off the oven, continue to keep the meringues in the oven for about 3 hours.

For the compote:

Chop the rhubarb and stew with a little water and sugar ( a couple of tablespoons each) for about 10 minutes.

Whip the cream until light and fluffy. To serve, crush the meringue and layer with compote, cream and edible flowers. Happy days!

The dessert is so simple and yet so sophisticated and I love how the different tastes and textures of the various ingredients complement each other so beautifully. I hope you have fun making this dessert and let me know how you get on! Ann x

Grape Jelly with Popping Candy

I don't hang about really. After our glorious lunch at Hambleton Hall, I set about trying to re-creating one the little mini-desserts we had with our coffee; the mango jelly with popping candy. We had a grape glut last year which meant I froze a whole bunch. I'd used them in cakes and muffins over the course of the winter but those weren't exciting preparations. On the other hand, posh grape jelly that crackled and popped in your mouth was! Here is how I made it...

Ingredients:

500g Grapes or 200ml grape juice
4 tbsp sugar
45g gulaman
Popping candy

Method:

Heat the grapes for about 10 minutes with 2 tbsp sugar to extract juice. Filter the juice. Add 45g gulaman to the 200ml of juice. Heat the mixture to a boil whilst stirring constantly.  Pour in a mould to cool. It takes about 40 minutes to set at room temperature but sets much quicker in the fridge. Once set, it is ready to be served. I sliced the jelly into cubes to re-create the Hambleton look. Top with popping candy and serve. This is such a fun and easy dessert to make. London Fashion Week AW13: Haizhen Wang

 

Haizhen Wang's was the last show of LFW AW13. Considering it was my first LFW season, I'd done pretty well with shows to the point where the much anticipated Emilio De Morena show failed to move me. It is amazing how quickly one can get blasé about these things. The long queueing in the cold and dark for Haizhen Wang ( it was a 6pm show that got delayed) was starting to get to me. However, as soon as the show began, I was completely won over by his fantastic collection.

Haizhen Wang was a newcomer to the main scene at LFW. He won Fashion Fringe last year and there was much excitement over his debut collection. That excitement was well justified. The designs were futuristic, well tailored and like a cross between Margiela, Balenciaga and Acne. I was completely wowed by both the show and the collection. Despite starting to feel slightly jaded by Day 5, the creative genius that was displayed at the final show enthused me all over again.

Charity Shops: St Barnabas Hospice Lincoln High Street

I'd had a rough week with one thing after another going wrong. Just as I was earnestly hoping for a wave of positivity to wash the bad taste of the week away, I passed by the St Barnabas Hospice Charity Shop*-The Attic. I could sense Ed's relief after several hours of patient tolerance of my grumpiness. In my experience, Charity shops (good ones) are the best antidote to misery. This one made me smile as soon as I walked in. The first item I spotted was a vintage Hermes Silk Scarf. The price was too good to be true and so I checked with the lady managing the store regarding the authenticity of the scarf.  She confirmed that the person that dropped it off verified it as being the deal deal. Wonderful!

I wandered round the store exploring its many vintage books, clothes, brooches, hats. etc. The shop has two floors full of quirky one-off pieces of fashion and art. Compared to similar shops in London, the prices were so much more reasonable. I picked up some gorgeous vintage brooches for a couple of quid each and a boxed YSL silk scarf for £10! I am totally smitten by this little charity shop and cannot wait to visit again soon. This is the place to go in Lincolnshire if you are on the look-out for unique vintage fashion items at very reasonable prices.
